06:41 pm - Mod Updates (please read)
ext_9289: (☄ mommy complex)
Happy STXI DVD release day! :D I've been meaning to make elements of this post for weeks now, but having dragged my feet sufficiently I now get to make several announcements at once. Settle in, it's a long one. If you post fic here, please read.

I. MODDING:

On the incontrovertible reasoning that three is a much nicer number than two, our second member ever [livejournal.com profile] rawles became a co-mod of Where No Woman, along with myself and the fabulous [livejournal.com profile] igrockspock! If the mods here were a girl group, Rawles might be known as "the organized one," so, you know, good hands!

II. FIC WARNINGS:

Warnings are mandatory in WNW for possibly triggering content such as rape, dubious consent, major character death, abuse, and strong kink. Less common triggers should also be warned for at the discretion of the author or request by a reader. However, while we appreciate that members are showing their support for the concept by erring on the side of caution, we ask that you please refrain from labeling your fic with joke warnings. Genre notes such as "fluff" or "sexy" would be better served by a separate Author's Note label, or may simply be indicated by the listed pairing and/or fic rating. Where No Woman is a community by and for adults, after all. :)

Please note that this is not directed at any one user, but a trend that has been observed over several weeks. Thank you for looking out for each other. <3

III. TAGGING:

I suspect I may never be fully satisfied with our system, but I've cleaned up our tags and added a few new ones you might like to know about.

canon: licensed will now apply to licensed (and yes, non-official-canon) Star Trek works such as novels and comics. In the same vein, when reccing one particular licensed piece, you may find the tag rec: licensed to be of use.
rec: promo is for those rare occasions when a member has a ficathon or community centering around Star Trek women and would like to bring our attention to it. Promos that are deemed irrelevant or obnoxious will be deleted at the mods' discretion.

most significantly!

I've provisionally implemented a new tag category, relationship, which I hope will make older fics more accessible for browsing.

relationship: femslash
relationship: het
relationship: friendship
relationship: family

^ are all appropriate uses of this tag. Of course, if you feel no particular relationship type applies to your piece, you are free to ignore it; likewise, multiple relationship types may appear in a single fanwork. This is a bit of an experiment -- it depends on how you, the members, take to it. As of now, if you wish to add relationship tags to your previously posted works, feel free! And if that sounds like a huge pain, [livejournal.com profile] rawles has volunteered to go back through the entire community's history and do it for you! That is why she is "organized mod" and I am "shows up intermittently and talks a lot mod."

IV. POSTING:

This is a gentle reminder that [livejournal.com profile] where_no_woman exists to promote and illuminate the female characters of Star Trek, as men receive the lion's share of attention both in canon and fandom. As inherently subjective a statement as this is, fics posted here must be womancentric, even if men also play important parts. I have never removed a fic from the community because I felt it didn't qualify, and I never plan to unless I see something obviously posted in error. Part of why we are here is to amplify your voices and maybe even inspire some new ones, knowing there are rich subject matter and an attentive audience after all. I simply ask that you please be honest with yourselves when considering whether your fic truly belongs here. Again, this is not directed at any one member or post, but a reestablishment of what has always been our purpose.

V. OPEN SOURCING:

I am not affiliated with An Archive of Our Own in any way; I am not even a member yet. However, since it is now in open beta and people are tagging their fics with communities, I wanted to let you all know that tagging your relevant fics over there with "community: where_no_woman" would be a-okay by me, and maybe a little exciting.

You are all lovely and wonderful people who collectively make my heart burst on an alarmingly regular basis. Thank you all for being a fantastic community! I blather because I love.

While this fic is part of a series, it can easily be read as a stand alone.

However, the character's name is not Jocelyn because the many and varied Trek novels aren't part of my personal canon.

( Rebecca straightens the house with an almost anal retentive fuss for detail. She's dusted the tops of cabinets, fluffed couch pillows, waxed the dining room table, vacuumed the floor, shampooed the poor damn cat, who's still grooming its dignity back a day later and is nowhere to be found, actually taken a toothbrush to the grout in the bathrooms, windexed every glass surface she found, for some reason scrubbed out the oven, as if for some reason he'd open the oven—… )
