Demora Sulu/Joanna McCoy [updated 12/20/09]

Hello! I hope fanmixes are allowed here! But even if they're not, I have "cleverly incorporated" the fanmix into an unofficial ship manifesto.

You've Got the Love

A fanmix for Demora Sulu/Joanna McCoy with unofficial ship manifesto.

Introduction

Star Trek, being such a vast fandom, hopefully has space for minor characters to have their day. Joanna McCoy and Demora Sulu exist canonically but face very little character development outside the confines of licensed works. This means that we have an almost clean slate to play with, or perhaps, less favourably, exploration of their character can become thinly-veiled Mary Sues/self-insert/stuff fandom generally frowns upon.

However, with the lack of screentime devoted to female characters, particularly in The Original Series (TOS)/The Alternate Original Series (AOS), I think both Demora and Joanna present another wonderful opportunity for fans to take up the slack to explore the female experience of being in Starfleet in the 23rd century, and also a wonderful opportunity to create strong female characters.

Within the context of the Alternate Original Series, characters who have had no screentime but whose existence is inferred from TOS, Number One and Christine Chapel, have received remarkable treatment within fandom in the form of fanart, fanfic etc. At the same time, characters such as Gaila, who appear in AOS but not in TOS, have also found popularity in fandom. Certain communities, such as [livejournal.com profile] startrek_diary , have even fabricated a backstory for the absent Helmsman McKenna as Caroline McKenna.

Bearing this in mind, and operating on the (somewhat Doctor Who-like) assumption that certain points in time are fixed and inalterable, and considering what the Star Trek 2009 movie proposes to the audience, it should not be too much of a stretch to assume that the existence of all characters are inalterable, which means that whatever happens, we're going to get a Demora Sulu and a Joanna McCoy in the alternate universe.

The Characters

Demora Sulu

Memory Alpha profile | Memory Beta profile

Demora Sulu has had actual screentime in Star Trek Generations, played by Jacqueline Kim, as the helmsman of the Enterprise-B.

During her appearance, it is never stated how she came about but Kirk expressed that he has no idea how Hikaru Sulu found time to have a family, and it is very much stated that Pavel Chekov knows her well. In fact, the writers considered making the character Pavel Chekov's daughter.

In licensed works, her mother is Susan Ling, and she met her father for the first time when she was six years old. She eventually becomes captain of the Enterprise-B after John Harriman.

What this means to me:

What? No way Hikaru Sulu is an absent father. I hate that trope. Let me rewrite this:

Chekov and Sulu were in love. Miraculously, they get a daughter. They call her Demora Pavlovna Sulu and she kicks so much ass she gets to captain the Enterprise. This is...inalterable in all timelines.

Joanna McCoy

Memory Alpha profile | Memory Beta profile

Joanna McCoy is unfortunate enough to not have had any canon character development and she never appears on screen. The daughter of Leonard McCoy, she was initially conceived as a love interest for Captain Kirk. Other facts we know are that she was training to be a nurse and wrote to her father often.

Memory Beta supplies further information, and we learn that her mother is Jocelyn McCoy, and her early childhood was spent in the McCoy family home in Atlanta until her parents separated.

She was eventually schooled on the planet Cerberus, which suffered crop failure and was faced with famine. We learn from The Animated Series that the planet of Cerberus was saved when Carter Winston used his personal fortune to feed the planet colonists.

What this means to me:

In reboot (AOS) I think the character of Leonard McCoy is considerably younger than he is in TOS. (Correct me if I'm wrong!) Maybe it's me but I think it's seriously weird for your best friend's daughter to be your love interest. I think if Joanna were to exist plausibly in AOS, she has to be a young child.

Also, the nurse thing? Is that due to sixties sexism or what? If Joanna were to follow closely in her father's footsteps, a revised version of Joanna would have her going to med school to become a doctor. Unless (and I would not object to this), in the 23rd century, all doctors first have to train as nurses.

The entire basis for my perception of Joanna McCoy is the completely delightful Dear Daddy series by [livejournal.com profile] jessofthebugs . Seriously go read it.

Additionally, [livejournal.com profile] mllesays has compiled a very comprehensive Joanna McCoy masterlist.

Why Do I Ship It?

Okay, okay, I know. This is actually a crack pairing, despite the SRS BSNS "ship manifesto" you're reading. The crack pairing is a result of the highly logical flow of thought as illustrated below.

Pavel Chekov + Hikaru Sulu = Demora ...(1)

Leonard McCoy + Jocelyn McCoy [+ influence of James T. Kirk, if you're a Kirk/McCoy type] = Joanna ...(2)

(1) + (2)

Therefore,

Demora + Joanna = SUPREME AWESOMENESS

But why?

I think this pairing has so much potential for AWESOMENESS. Assuming Joanna successfully follows her father's footsteps enough to become CMO of the Enterprise, well, let's just hope she'll be calling Demora captain.

And if she reeeeally follows her father's footsteps, they'll just be another in the long and well-established line of Captain/CMO pairings. (See reboot!Kirk/McCoy and Jean-Luc Picard/Beverley Crusher)

Back the fuck up, does this mean we've got TWO WOMEN in supremely important positions?

HELL YES.

Lawd, it's a bit cheesy though, don't you think? It's like a dynasty of gay pairings.

Um, who cares.

And it's too matchy-matchy. It's too neat. Like the whole thing is pre-arranged.

Yeah you know what? When Uhura and Spock procreate some mini Nyo-Spocklet (neo-Spocklet...okay this pun is bad), said Nyo-Spocklet is gonna become Science Officer of the Enterprise-B and HOLY TRIUMVIRATE, the circle of life is complete.

And this time around we'll let Scotty's nephew live.

Conclusion

I wish I could tell you more. I wish I could tell you stories about Demora and stories about Joanna, but alas there is none (well, not enough) and this "ship manifesto" is an exhortation to the fannish brethren to go forth and create some.

I leave you with...inspiration.

Ficlist

Okay, I'm definitely going to need help on this ficlist. Due to the nonexistent nature of this pairing, I'll accept any fic that includes both Joanna and Demora, no matter how small the role and the degree of interaction.

Currently we have four!.

Let it all stop here by [livejournal.com profile] echoinautumn [NC-17 - sex. Fic is mostly about Chekov/Sulu, but heavily features Demora. Demora and Joanna are playmates.]

I told you your dreams would come true by er, me. [PG. Fic is Demora-centric. Demora/Joanna is hinted at the end.]

Keys to the Kingdom by [livejournal.com profile] echoinautumn [R - dark themes. Mirror!Demora revenge!fic, with a side of Mirror!Demora/Mirror!Joanna] (newly posted!)

** New Addition! **

In the Sick Bay by [livejournal.com profile] tinocka [PG. Demora/Joanna, somewhat pre-slash, asking out on dates]

If you happen to know of more fics that fit the bill (fics that mention both Demora and Joanna no matter their significance to the actual plot) please link me to them like, right now.

Also, I'd really love to link to fanart so please share links!
