The August Drabblefest

The Rules:

1) Prompts are not exclusive. There is no limit on the number of people who may write about a prompt, and there is no need to claim prompts.

2) Post responses in the comments and include the lead character and your prompt in the subject line. If you choose a long prompt, you may use just the first few words.

3) Responses may be any length from a proper 100-word drabble to a multi-chapter epic. If the story is too long for comments, you may post it elsewhere and comment with the link.

4) There is no time limit for this challenge. I will return to index the responses in a week or so.

5) Please leave feedback, respond to feedback, and pimp this post around.

6) If your response is rated NC-17 or would require a content warning (for rape, graphic violence, etc.), you may post it in the comments here but you must include the relevant rating or warning in the subject line.

One of my favorite Trek reference books is the Star Trek Encyclopedia. That book has almost everything Trek related (TOS through Voyager) and is fic gold so I thought I'd share a few for each letter.

Yeah, that got long. Here's hoping you enjoy and that one of these little bits of information does the trick. Most of these are drawn from multiple series.


A

Academy Flight Range - Located near Saturn in the Sol System, an area of space reserved for flight exercises by cadets from Starfleet Academy.

Admiral's Banquet - Annual Starfleet social function.

Ak'voh - Old Klingon tradition in which a fallen warrior's comrades stay with the body to keep away predators. This allowed the spirit to leave the body when it was time to make the journey to Sto'vo'kor.

Audubon Park - Nature preserve located in New Orleans on Earth.

B

Biogenic weapon - extremely deadly biological armament, illegal under interstellar treaties. The components necessary to create biogenic weapons include biomimetic gel, retroviral vaccines, isomiotic hypos, and plasma flares.

Borhyas - in the Bajoran culture, a term for ghost or spirit

Bureau of Planetary Treaties - Branch of the Federation government that deals with interstellar agreements. When Captain Kirk disappeared on a diplomatic mission to Gideon in 2268, neither the Bureau nor any other agency was of much help.

C

Chromolinguistics - form of nonverbal communication.

Condition Green - Covert Starfleet code used to secretly indicate on a clear channel that the speaker is being held captive. Condition Green also prohibits the listener from taking any action such as a rescue mission.

Deneva - Federation planet considered by many to be one of the most beautiful in the galaxy, boasting a population of one million, having been colonized in the 22nd century, and served as a base for interstellar shipping.

Dikironium - Rare gaseous substance, formerly thought to be merely a laboratory curiosity. It was found to be a component in a dikironium cloud creature that killed 200 USS Farragut personnel at planet Tycho IV in 2257.

Earth Station McKinley - Starfleet shipbuilding and repair facility in Earth orbit. McKinley Station was a large orbital platform, supporting several large articulated work arms, designed to service even the largest starships.

Eidetic memory - Psychological term referring to an ability to recall images in near-photographic detail.

Falor's Journey - Traditional Vulcan folk song. A tale of enlightenment consisting of 348 verses. Falor was a prosperous merchant who went on a journey to gain greater awareness.

Federation Department of Temporal Investigations - Federal governmental agency. Temporal Investigations concerned itself with assessing potential damage to the flow of history caused by time travelers.

G

Gal Gath'thong - Location on Planet Romulus known for its great natural beauty and spectacular firefalls.

Gamma Vertis IV - Planet. The entire population of Gamma Vertis IV is unable to speak. (also appear to possess empathic abilities which extend to the treatment of injuries in others - eg "Gem" )

Gre'thor - in Klingon Mythology, the place where the dishonored go to die. Gre'thor is guarded by the mythic Klingon figure Fek'lhr.

H

Hasperat - Spicy Bajoran burrito whose filling is made with specially prepared brine. Correctly prepared, Hasperat will make the eyes water and sear the tongue.

Hodgkin's Law of Parallel Planet Development - Sociological theory postulating that similar planets with similar populations and environments will evolve in similar ways.

I

Iconians - An ancient and highly advanced civilization that mastered the technique of dimensional transport across interstellar distances. The Iconians, referred to in ancient texts as 'Demons of Air and Darkness' were believed destroyed 200,000 years ago in an orbital bombardment of their world. It is possible, however, that they might have survived using their gateway technology to escape to other worlds.

Imzadi - Betazoid term meaning Beloved

J

Jamaharon - a mysterious Risan sexual rite. On Risa, one announced the desire for it by displaying a Horga'hn statuette.

K

k'oh-nar - Vulcan term referring to a fear of being completely exposed in an emotionally vulnerable situation

Kiri-kin-tha's First Law of Metaphysics - "Nothing unreal exists."

L

Linguacode - Data communications format designed to be understandable by nearly any technologically sophisticated intelligence. Unlike normal encryption which serves to conceal information, linguacode was designed to make a message more accessible to a wide range of life-forms.

M

Martian Colonies - Settlements on the fourth planet of the Sol system. The first colony was established there in 2103.

Mesiofrontal cortex - Region of the Vulcan brain associated with the suppression/control of emotions.

Metaconscious - Part of the Betazoid psyche which filters and protects an individual from psychic trauma.

Metagenic weapon - Sophisticated biological weapon using genetically engineered viruses, designed to destroy any form of DNA. These viruses could mutate rapidly and were believed able to destroy entire ecosystems within days.

Mok'bara - Ritual Klingon martial-arts form, resembling terrestrial tai chi. The exercises are designed to enhance one's agility in hand-to-hand.

New Berlin - Federation settlement located on Earth's moon

Nova Squadron - Team of elite cadet pilots at Starfleet Academy. Nova squadron is comprised of five members who fly small single-pilot ships in acrobatic maneuvers.

O

Oath of Celibacy - A pledge by Deltan Starfleet personnel to abstain from sexual contact with sexually immature humanoid species.

Ocular implant - Cybernetic optical device that could be surgically implanted as a visual aide. Performing the same duty as a VISOR, they are are implanted into the eyes themselves.

Organian Peace Treaty - imposed by the Organians in 2267 after an incident on planet Organia between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. The Organian Peace Treaty decreed that the Organians would tolerate on hostilities between the two powers.

P

Pacifica - Beautiful ocean world known for warm blue waters and fine white beaches.

par'Mach - Klingon word for love, but featuring far more aggressive overtones than are common in most humanoid cultures.

Paracortex - Telepathic lobe of the Betazoid brain

Plomeek Soup - A traditional Vulcan soup, orange in colour.

Q


Qapla' - Klingon word meaning success. Oft used as a farewell.

Quantum fissure - Fixed point in the space-time continuum, essentially a keyhole into other realities.

R

Raal - a province located on the coast of the Vorath Sea on Vulcan.

Raktajino - Klingon coffee served either hot or iced

Reassociation - After two Joined Trill are married, the symbionts are strongly discouraged from relationships in later lifetimes. It is considered unnatural.

Renewal Scroll - symbolic paper scroll on which participants of the Bajoran Gratitude Festival write their problems. They then placed them into a special brazier to be burned so that their troubles might be symbolically turned to ash along with the paper.

S

Saurian Brandy - Potent liqueur. Saurian brandy is best imbibed in moderation.

Sehlat - Vulcan animal resembling a large teddy bear.

Seleya, Mount - A mountain on whose summit is located an ancient temple.

Sheliak - Classification R-3 lifeforms, the Sheliak are only vaguely humanoid. The Sheliak are a reclusive people and avoid contact with the Federation. This may be due to the Sheliak attitude that humans are an inferior form of life. The Treaty of Armens was established in 2255 between the Sheliak and the Federation, ceding several planets to the Sheliak.

Starfleet temporal displacement policy - Starfleet doctrine intended to prevent interference in the flow of history by any time traveling personnel. The policy prohibits any person transported into the past from doing anything that might alter the timeline.

T

T'Karath Sanctuary - Ancient catacombs located on Vulcan. It had been a strong hold for one of the political factions during the last Vulcan civil war, two millennia ago.

T'lokan Schism - In Vulcan physiology, a condition wherein a repressed memory causes physical brain damage. The schism is the physical reaction to the battle between the conscious and the unconscious regarding the memory's resurfacing. A mind-meld with a family member to bring the memory to the fore is the advised method of treatment.

Tal Shiar - Elite Romulan imperial intelligence service. The Tal Shiar is a secret, often brutal, sometimes extragovernmental agency that enforced loyalty among the Romulan citizenry and military.

Titan's Turn - Dangerous maneuver sometimes used by Starfleet shuttle pilots making the Jovian run. The procedure, banned by Starfleet, involves flying almost directly toward Titan, a moon of Saturn, then almost skimming Titan's atmosphere before turning sharply around the moon at 0.7c.

Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards - Starfleet shipyards in orbit around the planet Mars and on the surface of the planet.

Uttaberries - a blueberry like fruit found on Betazed.

Vulcana Regar - City on Vulcan

Warp 10 - Under warp theory, an infinite velocity unattainable by normal warp drive technology. An object traveling at warp 10 would theoretically occupy all points in the universe simultaneously.

Yash-El, night blessing of - "Dream not of today"

yIntagh - a Klingon expletive

Yridians - Civilization of humanoids known as interstellar dealers of information.

Z

Zanthi Fever - Viral condition that affects the empathic abilities of mature Betazoids. A patient suffering from Zanthi fever can involuntarily project emotions onto others.

Zhian'tara - Trill rite of closure, a ceremony to allow a joined Trill to meet the symbiont's previous hosts. The zhian'thara is accomplished by telepathically transferring the memories of each past host from the symbiont to a different friend who embodies that host's personality for the length of the ceremony. The ceremony allows joined Trill insight into their past lives.
