Thank you to the Vulcan Language Dictionary for certain words, particularly for help in verifying my spelling of ashv'cezh, revenge-worse-than-death.
As always, my idea of Vulcan culture is heavily influenced by Diane Duane's Star Trek novels, particularly Spock's World, which you should read if you haven't already. (Also by various other Star Trek novels of the 1980s, including The Vulcan Academy Murders, The IDIC Epidemic and Dwellers in the Crucible.)

10th-Mar-2011 08:12 pm - Welcome new members! And a tagging announcement for all.
ext_9289: (guinan)
Hello everyone! I've noticed an uptick in new membership lately, and I wanted to welcome you all to [livejournal.com profile] where_no_woman. I know we're at nearing that point on the fannish parabola that's farthest away since the last movie, right before new info starts trickling in about the next, so new blood is wonderful to have. Please make yourselves at home; here's a quick rundown of how things work around here. Members who have been around for a while, enjoy the refresher course or scroll down to the tagging section, which has an IMPORTANT! NEW! ANNOUNCEMENT!

You can post fic, art, critical discussion, squee, challenges, recs, and anything else here so long as it is about a woman or women in Star Trek.
It doesn't have to be gen. It doesn't have to have an Uplifting Feminist Message (though it cannot be bashing). It doesn't have to portray gender in a traditional way (interpretations of canon female characters as trans* are welcome, and we're not the gender police). It just has to honestly be about the ladies. Like, not "I know people here like Amanda so I'm crossposting my epic here even though it's really Sarek's story," but actually features her in A starring role, if not THE starring role. We trust you to understand your own work, and in nearly two years we've had very few deletions.

This isn't just a movie community. All Treks may apply!

Warnings/content advisories are mandatory. Portrayals of rape, abuse, character death, and graphic violence are required to carry a trigger warning.

We're on AO3. If you use the Archive of Our Own, feel free to add your fic to our collection, or browse what's up there already (including three past challenges). Here are the results of our most recent New Year Exchange.

We're not really on Dreamwidth yet but we do have a feed there! (Unfortunately, it doesn't respect lj-cuts, which I would fix if only I could figure out how.)

Tagging is important, but don't worry, it's also easy! ALL members, please read as I have an IMPORTANT! NEW! ANNOUNCEMENT! (Spoiler: it's that you can no longer create new tags. More on that in a bit.)

Our tagging guide is here, but I'm going to go over it all. Brace yourselves.

The main tags here are canon:, challenge:, character:, creative:, discussion:, rec:, and relationship:.

canon: means the version of Star Trek you're referencing. TOS (the original series), TAS (the animated series), TNG (the next generation), DS9 (deep space nine), VOY (voyager), AOS (alternate original series a.k.a the 2009 movie reboot!), and licensed (comics and tie-in novels).

challenge: is for community challenges. If you're posting an entry to one of them, tag it with the appropriate challenge name!

character: is the *female characters* that star in your post. For uniformity's sake, Starfleet members (and other characters whose role is largely professional) are called by their professional name, e.g. Uhura not Nyota, Kira not Nerys, and Marcus not Carol. Other characters go by their first name, e.g. Keiko not O'Brien, Joanna not McCoy, etc. Original female characters are tagged "character: ofc," and canon characters without names are tagged "character: canon unnamed."

creative: is the type of creation you've made. Fanfiction is "creative: fic," icons are ... "creative: icons," art is "creative: fanart," etc.

discussion is just discussion! :D

rec: is a recommendation for something you saw elsewhere on the internet and want to share, like "rec: article" or "rec: media" or "rec: fic." This also covers promotions for other communities or ficathons you're advertising, tagged as "rec: promo."

relationship: is to help people find the type of fic they like, be it "relationship: het" or "relationship: femslash" or "relationship: friendship" (or professional or family)!

Okay, so now that I've eaten your fpage with this refresher guide, an entreaty and the IMPORTANT! NEW! ANNOUNCEMENT! Please tag. It's really helpful to mods and it's really helpful to people browsing the tags for old fic. And if there's no tag for the character you're writing about, or the type of fanwork you've created, just tag it with ~pleasetag, as seen on this post. Because... members can no longer create new tags! (IMPORTANT! NEW! ANNOUNCEMENT!) But don't despair, because we have a LOT of tags already and you can consult them at any time if you're not sure how a character has previously been tagged. ~pleasetag! Remember it! :)

Whew.

That was a lot, so I'm going to crawl back under my rock. Remember, you can always contact the mods with concerns or ideas by commenting here, and live long and prosper and stuff.
