17th-Jun-2015 11:24 pm - Female-focused remix is open for business
beatrice_otter: Saavik (Saavik)
[community profile] femmeremix is open for signups on AO3. It's a multi-fandom remix (i.e. a ficathon where you're assigned another fic writer and re-write one of their stories as your own)

Are you into stories about women*? Have you written stories about women? Would you like to read and write more of them? Would you like to read and write stories based on other people's stories? Yes? Motherfucking yes? Well then, this is the remix for you!

We all know how much fun remix can be, but we also know that it can be frustrating sometimes, especially for those of us who generally don't write slash and/or write a lot of stories about women. We get matched, we're really excited about it, and then our remixee has only written slash. Or stories go up, we're really excited about it, and our remixer has skipped over the 99 awesome stories about women and remixed the 1 not-so-awesome story about men. This remix offers people a chance to focus on women.

*"Women" here is loosely defined to include canonical alien/trans/non-genderbinary characters who identify as female. It does not include Rule 63/"always-a-girl" characters. She-Hulk is in, Brucella Banner is not.
You need to have written at least three female-focused fics of 500 words or more to be able to sign up in a fandom.  There's no list of qualifying fandoms, you can sign up with ANY FANDOM you have enough female-focused fics in (and the rules are pretty loose about what counts as a female-focused fic).  There are already people signed up in AOS, TOS, DS9, and Voyager.  (Sadly, no TNG or Enterprise as yet)

Sign-up Closes:  Fri 19 Jun 2015 12:00AM EDT
Assignments Due: Mon 03 Aug 2015 12:00AM EDT
Works Revealed: Thu 06 Aug 2015 12:00AM EDT

6th-Sep-2011 11:39 pm - Promo: "We Love the Women Fandom Hates"
Shamelessly stolen discovered from the wonderful and ever-relevant-to-my-interest[livejournal.com profile] rubynye, who tipped me off unto this awesomeness. I figure since this comm is all about fighting sexism in fandom and giving voices to the silenced women of the Star Trek verse, this fest might be relevant to some of our interests:

[livejournal.com profile] akzseinga is having a fest celebrating unpopular women running from this Friday to next Friday.

Fandoms of any size are encouraged, any female character you've seen hate against (even if it's just from a few people) is eligible, and reposting old content appears to be allowed if I'm reading the comments correctly. You can write meta or fic, make graphics, share fanmixes, or basically anything else that's celebrating the female character you've claimed. There is a limit of three claims per language per character (so, three people could create for a character in English, and three more in Spanish, and three more in Russian, etc.)."

Note: The label "unpopular" is somewhat problematic. However, because of the sexism prevalent in fandom, I believe that almost any female character in the 'verse has been "bitchified" in fic and/or meta, or merely ignored, objectified, or silenced. Let's take the power back, shall we? :)
13th-Aug-2011 07:37 pm - Dax and Kira Reunited at the STLV Convention!
Or, Terry Farrell and Nana Visitor. ;)

30th-Aug-2010 10:46 pm - Beta Request
So, I've finished my submission for the Uhura is Awesome Fic Fest, but it's my first time writing anything with her in a main role or from her perspective, so I was hoping I might appeal to some kind soul for a beta read? (If that's all right; if it's not, please let me know and I'll delete this post-haste.)

The fic's a shorter than 2700 words for this prompt: Uhura is leading the landing party, and things turn nasty. And I'll gladly trade my own services as a beta (for what they're worth) or some other fan-y thing (icon-making, other ficcy fun) as a thanks.

So, um, yeah. Just let me know. :)

EDIT: Other beta request made (and more are welcome) in comments.

ext_550384: (Default)
I have had the same background on my computer for ages, and I'm looking to change it. I have scoured the internets in search of wallpapers with awesome Star Trek ladies (TOS or AOS, preferably, but I'm not picky as to which one), but I've been unable to find any good ones. Does anyone have links to where I might find such a thing? I would be eternally grateful.
