Female-focused remix is open for business

[community profile] femmeremix is open for signups on AO3. It's a multi-fandom remix (i.e. a ficathon where you're assigned another fic writer and re-write one of their stories as your own)

Are you into stories about women*? Have you written stories about women? Would you like to read and write more of them? Would you like to read and write stories based on other people's stories? Yes? Motherfucking yes? Well then, this is the remix for you!

We all know how much fun remix can be, but we also know that it can be frustrating sometimes, especially for those of us who generally don't write slash and/or write a lot of stories about women. We get matched, we're really excited about it, and then our remixee has only written slash. Or stories go up, we're really excited about it, and our remixer has skipped over the 99 awesome stories about women and remixed the 1 not-so-awesome story about men. This remix offers people a chance to focus on women.

*"Women" here is loosely defined to include canonical alien/trans/non-genderbinary characters who identify as female. It does not include Rule 63/"always-a-girl" characters. She-Hulk is in, Brucella Banner is not.
You need to have written at least three female-focused fics of 500 words or more to be able to sign up in a fandom.  There's no list of qualifying fandoms, you can sign up with ANY FANDOM you have enough female-focused fics in (and the rules are pretty loose about what counts as a female-focused fic).  There are already people signed up in AOS, TOS, DS9, and Voyager.  (Sadly, no TNG or Enterprise as yet)

Sign-up Closes:  Fri 19 Jun 2015 12:00AM EDT
Assignments Due: Mon 03 Aug 2015 12:00AM EDT
Works Revealed: Thu 06 Aug 2015 12:00AM EDT
Authors Revealed: Thu 13 Aug 2015 12:00AM EDT

Star Trek Friendshipfest 2015 - Signups Open!

The Star Trek Friendshipfest fic exchange is running for the second year!

It's an exchange for all kinds of friendships in the Star Trek prime universe. (That said, if you request TOS characters in your signup form and want them in their AOS incarnations, you can ask for that in your optional details, although it's not guaranteed.)

There are lots of great friendships between women in the requests so far, and in the tagset from which you can request friendships.

If you'd like to take part, more details and instructions are HERE, and signups close on June 6th!

Fic: A Daughter of the Fifth House

Title: A Daughter of the Fifth House
Author: [personal profile] beatrice_otter
Fandom: Star Trek: The Next Generation
Characters: Deanna Troi, Lwaxana Troi, Will Riker
Rating: G
Word Count: 2558
Summary: I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I intended to be.--Douglas Adams

At AO3

Deanna gritted her teeth, shielded her mind, and stared down at the class work on the PADD in front of her with as much focus as she could muster. )

Fic: The Mountain Rose Before Me

Fandom: Star Trek
Rating: G
Characters: T'Lar, Sarek, Uhura
Word Count:  3,196
Warnings: none
Summary: The fal-tor-pan is an ancient and dangerous rite, unused for centuries. It is not done lightly. High Priestess T'Lar considers.

AN: This fic was inspired by Killabeez's excellent vid Dante's Prayer.
Thank you to the Vulcan Language Dictionary for certain words, particularly for help in verifying my spelling of ashv'cezh, revenge-worse-than-death.
As always, my idea of Vulcan culture is heavily influenced by Diane Duane's Star Trek novels, particularly Spock's World, which you should read if you haven't already. (Also by various other Star Trek novels of the 1980s, including The Vulcan Academy Murders, The IDIC Epidemic and Dwellers in the Crucible.)

Uhura fanvids

You know, over in the Doctor Who/Torchwood fandom, they have a major character played by an actor who is also a singer.  I could name several DW/TW vids to John Barrowman songs.  Lots.

So where are all the Star Trek vids made to Nichelle Nichols' songs?  Why have I never seen one?  I mean, there's a classic vid of Leonard Nimoy singing "Both Sides Now,"  (and if somebody's done a vid to the Shat's version of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, please don't tell me) so why has nobody done Nichelle, who can actually sing?

Your mission, should you choose to accept it!  Is to make a Star Trek fanvid (preferably Uhura-focused, but I'm easy) to one of Nichelle Nichols songs!

(Of course, I get that the reason why is that Barrowman is recording now, and Nichols' two albums were recorded decades ago, but still.)

Signal boost! Female-centric Remix on the way!

[personal profile] theladyscribe will run a multi-fandom female-focused Remix this summer at [community profile] femmeremix (or [tumblr.com profile] femmeremix ).  Sign-ups will be in early May, fics will be due in early July.

Right now they're in the planning stages and they're still deciding what fandoms will be used.  The OFFICIAL POLL is HERE. Please direct comments here.

Need a beta!

Hey, guys, I just wrote a 3k-word Carol Marcus TOS-fic that desperately needs a beta.  Any takers?

(Re-watching Wrath of Khan, it was ... refreshing to see how awesome the original Carol Marcus was.)

ETA: That was fast!  Beta found.

Star Trek Into Darkness Spoiler Thread!

Here's a thread just for Star Trek Into Darkness SPOILERS. As in, for people who have already seen the film and wish to discuss its woman-related content. If you just wanna say hi to the community and dust yourself off without getting spoiled, hop one entry back. Here: go nuts*.

*within reason because, not having seen the movie myself, I'm not reading comments for a few days and am thus asking you to behave yourselves!**

hailing frequencies open!

Hello, dear womanfans! (That's fans of woman. Women. I'm tired.) It has come to my attention that this movie I never believed I'd live to see has finally materialized, and with it (I'M GUESSING) some chicks in space!

I haven't seen the movie yet, and I will not be able to for a couple of days yet. However, I know many of you will have, and so I will be making a post for you to discuss if you like. This post and its comments, however, should remain spoilerfree.

Of course, you may wish to make your own posts regarding the movie, be they discussion, fic, or icons. All awesome! But please do keep your STID spoilers blacked out or behind cuts, and take a moment to refresh yourself on the community guidelines in our profile and pseudo-FAQ before posting.

Comments, questions, sparkly gifs? Star Trek is back! [kazooooooooo]

Welcome to the world of tomorrow!!!

OH HEY, I GUESS I SHOULD OPEN THE CURTAINS AND LET THE LIGHT IN HERE.

Import and open posting will begin shortly (what's this? yes! a truly active branch of Where No Woman, home to all of Star Trek's ladies and femmesque androgynes, right here!). Until then, this post is here for your general party/drabbles/hello/introduction/tire-kicking purposes. Make yourselves at home!

P.S. If anybody is competent enough with CSS to vanquish the two white lines intruding on the top and bottom of our layout, please let me know.
